More about PURPLE ROOSTER

Purple Rooster Theatre was founded in 2013 by the company’s artistic director, Hannah Roe, and is based in Birmingham. We are an emerging all-female artistic collective creating new imaginings and interpretations of existing stories through provocative, dynamic and striking interdisciplinary theatre.

We tell stories that need to be told by combining a diverse range of story-making techniques with the skills of a strong collective of female associate artists. Stories are the lifeblood of our company and we find them in everything: history, media, news, plays, diary entries, cinema, novels, memoirs, poetry, art, anecdotes, music, observations, even a single word. Purple Rooster turns these stories into immersive, exciting, accessible theatrical experiences whilst maintaining a contemporary relevance and a dominant female voice.

Purple Rooster are proud to be an all-female organisation. This does not mean that we preach the hatred of men or intend to exclude them from our work entirely. It’s because feminism about equality, freedom and access for women, and we want to celebrate, champion and increase the presence of women in theatre in our own small way.
